INSPIRATION | A fine example of medieval mandrake depictions can be found in the Latin natural history encyclopedia Hortus Sanitatis / Garden of Health.

It was published by Jacob Meydenbach in Mainz, Germany in 1491.

The work describes species found in nature, their medicinal uses, and methods of preparation. The author does not limit himself to the treatment of real creatures, but also reports on mythical animals.

The mandrake is a plant with an interesting human-shaped root. It was attributed magical powers, and was not only consumed, but also worn as an amulet against demonic possession, a cure for infertility, and a mascot that brought good luck and happiness. It has a very diverse cultural history, dating back to the world of ancient medicine and mysticism. It was used as an aphrodisiac, a sleeping pill, against rheumatism, and to treat many diseases.

Description

I make these special works of art from thin gold-colored metal sheets, with meticulous, jewelry-quality workmanship, and hand embossing. Each piece is made individually, by hand, NOT with a printing stencil. They are almost like a piece of jewelry on the wall. Each piece is unique, no two are the same. On the back of the picture there is a brand mark and signed by the artist, Erika Baglyas. The picture frames are unique pieces, I will discuss them with you when ordering. They will be shipped very carefully packaged.
