Description

This notebook is created for the wonderful movie On Body and Soul directed by Ildikó Enyedi in close cooperation with the MOZINET, the film’s Hungarian distributor.

Personalized in two wild animals
In december 2016 Mozinet invited us to create unique notebooks for the movie On Body and Soul of Ildikó Enyedi so as to give them as a gift at the side-events of the film. That time it was sure that the movie would take part at the Berlinale and we all hoped that it would be the one that get the Golden Bear. Before doing anything about the notebook I sat down to watch the movie. I wanted to grasp the message to which we have to connect an everyday object. I will never forget that special evening when I emptied my brain, sat down in front of the screen and pushed the Play button. The movie has made a deep impression on me, it is still alive in my soul. After finishing the film I wrote a short email to the distributor: ‘It is impossible to make a notebook for this movie.’ That is how this project has begun.
As we went on with planning it became clear that we would make a light notebook, a tiny little thing of which details one can easily fall for. We chose a noble, white, volumenised Munken paper of 80 grams, we set the spine width, which then defined the number of the sheets. It was an important phase to fine the scale of the notebook and we took the ratio of the movie: 1:2,35. After seeing the film it was obvious that the notebook can’t have a soft cover so we voted for a thin hard cover with blind embossing and gilding.
I always wanted to try a bookbinding technology when the thread-stitched spine has no flyleaves, the pages are glued only to the back cover so the spine of the book is visible. That method allowed the endpapers being covered by linen and separated from the sheets. In other words: it could have a life of its own. Maybe it is a tiny detail but this could be a piece of freedom inside an object’s functional life.
